Empire Theatre announces major production for 25th anniversary
To celebrate 25 years of an iconic Toowoomba entertainment venue, its major production of 2023 has been revealed – and they’ve got their eyes set on an international star for the casting.

Theatre enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take a trip to Rio without even leaving the Garden City, when The Boy From Oz returns to the Empire Theatre.
Following the story of Peter Allen, who started out singing in Aussie pubs at the age of 11, before he was discovered by Judy Garland and rose to international fame, The Boy From Oz is a musical about the late great’s life.
After they produced the show in 2011, Empire Theatre’s general manager Kerry Saul said it would be the first time they had repeated a show in history due to its success.
“We think it’s a bit nationalistic – it’s about Australia and it’s a little bit of home so we think that’s a great way to kick off 2023,” he said.
Auditions are now open with the creative team looking to find 30 talented cast members with four or five lead spots available.
“We’re hoping Hugh Jackman will put his hand up, but that’s kind of unlikely.”
To celebrate the theatre’s 25th anniversary, the show will be its major production next year.
Presented by Mort and Co, The Boy From Oz will be at the Empire Theatre between March 17 to 26.
Tickets are available to purchase from November 4.
