THE detection of two drivers under the influence of drugs on a busy section of highway has come as a major concern to Toowoomba traffic police.
Officer-in-charge of Toowoomba police station Senior Sergeant Tony Neumann said an operation on the Warrego Hwy at Charlton yesterday netted the drivers as well as other traffic offenders.
"Of most concern to us is the fact we had a couple of drug drivers," Snr Sgt Neumann said.
Officers from Toowoomba as well as a specialist mobile drug testing unit from Brisbane set up in two locations in the Charlton area from 12.45pm until 4.30pm.
They also caught four unlicensed drivers, three of whom had their vehicles impounded.
A further 16 general traffic infringement notices were handed out for offences including not wearing a seatbelt.
"It was a very effective operation for what we set out to achieve."
Snr Sgt Neumann said 11 people had been killed on Darling Downs roads this year, which was a motivating factor for the strict enforcement.
"That stretch of road (the Warrego Hwy) has accounted for a significant number of crashes.
"Drivers can expect to be intercepted any time, anywhere in Queensland."
