PARTS of the Wellcamp Entertainment Precinct will be specifically designed for a potential 2032 south-east Queensland Olympic Games, Wagner Corporation chairman John Wagner has said.

The comments came as Mr Wagner and Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick this morning officially unveiled plans for the $175 million facility, for which the State Government will contribute $40 million.

“I’m very confident that south-east Queensland will win the 2032 Olympics bid,” Mr Wagner said.

“We have put the land aside as part of this complex to be able to cater for Olympic events.

“I’m very confident that if we do win the 2032 Olympics, we will have fast rail to the airport here, which will help serve the precinct as well.”

Mr Wagner said infrastructure like fast rail to Brisbane, for which the Federal Government is currently working on a business case, would have to be built to cater for the crowd sizes at the precinct.

“If we’ve got crowds of 40,000 to 50,000 people here at any one time we need the infrastructure to be able to get people back to Brisbane and other regional parts of Queensland

“That number of people all can’t stay in Toowoomba, they’ll have to get back to Brisbane, we have the Toowoomba Bypass — and with fast rail we will have the trifecta to be able to handle those sort of crowds.”

The proposed WEP will include the Will Power Centre for Motorsport and Driver Training Excellence – a world-class facility catering for all levels of motorsport from amateur club racing through to professional events; road safety training and driver education facilities for all levels of drivers and vehicle types; research and innovation partnerships with universities and industry partners, including automotive manufacturers; and road safety and driver training facilities and vocational training opportunities.

There will also be a 40,000-person amphitheatre for music festivals and events, as well as business tourism and event facilities and a 5000 person on-site accommodation option.

“I’m very excited about this,” Mr Wagner said.

“I think this will change the whole region.”

Mr Wagner said he called on the Federal Government to match the state’s $40 million investment in the project.

He said he expected the 40,000 capacity amphitheatre to attract some of the largest international acts.

But on who might be the first act to perform at the venue, Mr Wagner remained tight-lipped.

“That’s a secret, I’ve got it all sorted, but I’m not at liberty to disclose that,” he said with a chuckle.

“This is a world-class facility and we will attract not only domestic people, but international people.”

Treasurer Cameron Dick said he hoped to one day see The Rolling Stones play at the venue.
