One of Toowoomba’s largest shopping centres will turn some of its carparking into two drive-through fast food eateries, which will include an international franchise’s first store in the Garden City.

Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre has lodged plans with the council to create two drive-through outlets for Taco Bell and KFC along James Street in Newtown, not far from the current entrance.

Vehicle tyre servicing company Mycar will also take up space in the northeast corner of the site, closest to Vacy Street.

It comes a year after the centre was bought by Elanor Investors Group for $145m, with the company outlining a number of changes.

Elanor’s head of retail, development and mixed use Matt Healy flagged the proposal at the time, saying the centre had been “oversubscribed” for parking.

Why Breakfast Could Decide Who Wins the Fast Food Wars

The two fast-food eateries will operate seven days from 10am to midnight, while the mycar service centre will be open six days a week.

A 10m pylon sign is also slated to be built on the corner of James Street and Anzac Avenue to advertise the eateries.

According to the report by Revolution Town Planning, the improvements will create dozens of jobs once complete.

“The proposed food and drink outlets and low impact industry will generate about 70 full-time equivalent positions and complement the existing retail and commercial uses within the existing shopping centre and enhance consumer convenience and choice in the locality,” the report said.

“Site stormwater will be directed to the existing on-site stormwater infrastructure and discharged to a lawful point of discharge.

“The proposed development includes a new pedestrian entry from James Street to connect the food and drink outlets to both the street frontage and the existing shopping centre.

“This entry will be landscaped to provide an identifiable and attractive interface with James Street for the new development.”

If approved, the development will enhance the intersection as a fast food location, with the area already offering McDonald’s, Pizza Guardians, Zarraffas Coffee and number of other eateries.

The application also includes additional reports into landscaping, traffic and noise impacts and stormwater planning.
