Construction has started on a $31m commercial precinct that will replace one of the city’s most infamous eyesores.

NRG Construction and its subcontractors are on-site now at the corner of James and West Streets in Harristown to build the new Officeworks site.

The massive project, a partnership between Cathy and Rob Weymouth and Daniel and Kate Cooper, includes the relocation of the Officeworks, another retail tenancy and two drive-through eateries.

It will replace the now-demolished remains of the old Snap Fitness gym that burned down, along with the old Toowoomba squash courts that have also been removed.

The project will also involve the construction of more than 120 car parks.

Mr Weymouth said the development was his most ambitious to date.

“It’s the biggest one so far, we’re doing an Officeworks in Cairns and that’s about $20m because that doesn’t have the extra fast food tenancies,” he said.

“We’re really excited, it’s going to be a big development and we’re really happy, it’s going to be great.

“We’ve had to export about 11,000 cubic metres of material to get the site ready, it’s about 3.5 acres so it’s very big.”

The construction start comes nearly a year after the Toowoomba Regional Council approved the plans, which were originally proposed back in 2022.

Mr Weymouth said contracts had nearly been secured for the two fast food tenancies, while leasing was still available for the 750 sqm retail site.

“We’ve got two fast food tenancies going in, they’re good national operators, so we’ve got really good brands to go in there,” he said.

“We’ve still got 750 sqm we’re trying to lease, we’ve got various offers we’re trying to work through.”

The precinct is expected to open by April next year.
