A prominent pair of developers have put forward plans for a new medical centre and pharmacy to meet an “undersupply” in a growth area of Toowoomba.

Barry and Mitchell Bernoth lodged the development application last week with the council for a parcel of land opposite the new OzCare aged care facility on Greenwattle Street in Harristown.

According to the planning report by JFP Urban Consultants, the design will include tenancies for a GP clinic and pharmacy, along with a new parking lot to cater for customers.

“The building materials include a mix of traditional and contemporary features to provide an attractive urban built form,” the report said.

“Further, the proposed building materials and interface provide a sensitive urban design outcome that is compatible with the existing low-medium density residential character in the

Harristown locality.”

The submission included an economic needs assessment, which found the Harristown/Glenvale area could cater for more medical services.

“The proposed development would consolidate essential uses in the one district centre, adding medical and pharmaceutical services to the current mix of retail and commercial facilities and existing and approved childcare centres in contributing to the district centre role of Glenvale in catering to localised weekly and convenience needs,” the report by Urban Economics said.

“There is a current undersupply of health and wellbeing services in the catchment area, while residents and shoppers at the Glenvale district centre would have a reasonable expectation of access to health and wellbeing facilities to cater to their day-to-day needs.

“The proposed development co-located with the approved childcare centre and opposite the residential aged care will contribute to the role of Glenvale as a district centre and important hub for the Glenvale community.”

Since the development is impact-assessable, feedback from the public will need to be sought.

The Bernoths already have an approved childcare centre planned for land next to the proposed site, as well as a subdivision on the other side.
