Toowoomba CBD residential projects could apply for $557,000 in infrastructure charges discounts

Two upcoming major residential developments on the same street in the Toowoomba CBD could apply to have $557,000 in council charges wiped as part of an incentives scheme.

The planning team behind the Toowoomba Skyhouses project on Mylne Street has confirmed it will apply for the council’s temporary CBD development incentives policy in the coming weeks.

Developed by the council several years ago, the policy offers to waive a CBD development’s infrastructure charges bill up to $1m if the project meets key guidelines.

To date, the only application was Kenneth Wagner for the Oaks Toowoomba hotel.

Speaking for the skyhouse developer Burke Enterprises Pty Ltd, Precinct Urban Planning’s Andrew Bullen said the project met the criteria for its $348,000 bill to be wiped.

“We’ve already flagged our intentions, because under that policy you’ve got to apply for a development confirmation notice,” he said.

“The council confirmed we were eligible, so this is really the second stage of the process.”

The six-storey project will include eight “skyhouse” apartments, four townhouses, as well as retail and hospitality tenancies.

It’s the second major residential development approved on Mylne Street this year, after developer Barry Bernoth was given the green light for a 12-unit tower not far from Grand Central Shopping Centre.

That project comes with an infrastructure charges bill worth $209,000.

Mr Bernoth had previously indicated he would look into the policy.
