Mitchell and Barry Bernoth have contracted Newlands Group to complete the fit-out of the old First National property on the intersection of Hume and Herries St in East Toowoomba.
While the works appear to be quite dramatic considering the scaffolding and removal o the roof, Mitchell Bernoth said it was actually a straightforward refurbishment.
“They’re pretty minor works, we’ve just got to remove the asbestos from the roof and upgrade the airconditioning,” he said.
“Given it was an asbestos roof, ripping off the roof looks pretty dramatic.
“But it’s ultimately not a major job, and once it’s done it won’t look greatly different.”
Mr Bernoth praised Newlands for the work it was doing on the project.
The building, which used to be the Baptist Church before the organisation moved several years ago, recently housed the First National real estate agency.
A branch of the State Government will be the new tenant, believed to be the Department of Education.
The building itself has plenty of sentimental value for Barry Bernoth.
“My late Linda and I were married in that church,” he said.
“After the Baptist Church moved out to Glenvale, we bought it — it hasn’t changed much in 50 years.”
