A developer’s plan to build a six-storey “skyhouse” mixed-use tower in the Toowoomba CBD has been approved by the council.

Burke Enterprises Pty Ltd was given the green light to build a major complex on the corner of Mylne Street and Baty Lane in Toowoomba City.

The development will include two linked six-storey glass towers each containing four “skyhouse” apartments, with views overlooking the city.

The plan also includes four two-storey townhouses with open-air roof gardens fronting Baty Lane, along with a retail shop on Mylne Street.

A former radiator shop will then be converted into a two-storey food and drink outlet, with a cafe on the ground floor and a restaurant above it.

According to the report by Precinct Urban Planning, the massive development will activate an area of the CBD that had not been previously developed.

“The complex will be of contemporary masonry and face brick construction with aluminium framed glazing to upper levels,” the report said.

“The two residential towers will be separated from the townhouses and restaurant/cafe buildings.

“The complex is purposefully designed to be of contemporary design and have a bulk and scale compatible with its intended role as a premium apartment and specialised destination retail and dining precinct.

“The layout and design of the mixed-use precinct provides for cafe, restaurant, and retail tenancies to be orientated towards and directly accessible from the subject land’s primary Mylne Street frontage.”

It is understood the project qualifies for the Toowoomba Regional Council’s CBD incentives scheme, which if successful would lead to a reduction in infrastructure charges for the developer.

No application has been made at this point.

It comes just a few months after developer Barry Bernoth was approved for a massive residential tower on the same street.
