The owners of a longstanding pub in a small town just outside Toowoomba have revealed plans for an extension, focusing on one core service.

An iconic pub in a small Toowoomba region town will undergo a significant extension, two years after new owners took over the premises.

Grand Hotel Oakey publicans Darren and Kim Fleming have lodged plans with the Toowoomba Regional Council for an extension to the venue on Campbell Street.

The expansion would see the pub get a much larger drive-through bottle shop.

According to the report by Precinct Urban Planning’s James Williams, the new bottle shop would be based in a large shed to the rear of the site.

“It is considered that the freestanding outbuilding located at the rear of the site contains no heritage or cultural significance and as such will be demolished to facilitate the proposed bottle shop,” he wrote.

“The proposed single storey building will have a maximum height of 5m above the natural ground level.

“The new proposed building will be constructed with high quality, contemporary materials that are attractive, durable and require minimal maintenance.”

It is understood the bottle shop will run seven days a week from 10am until 8pm, with extended hours until midnight on Fridays.

The Grand Hotel has been a mainstay in Oakey for more than a century and was bought by the Flemings in 2022.

The council has yet to respond to the application with an information request.
