Millmerran residents will have access to high-quality health care by 2025 thanks to a billion-dollar deal set to come into effect in the coming months.

As part of a $1.038bn commitment by the state government, the new Millmerran Multipurpose Health Service will replace the current hospital from 2025, with the project to be tendered early this year.

“The existing health facilities in Doomadgee and Millmerran have served their communities well but they are ageing and in need of replacement,” Health and Ambulance Minister Yvette D’Ath said.

“The new facilities will deliver more contemporary clinical spaces, improving the patient and staff experience.”

The incoming state-of-the-art hospital will have an eight-bed inpatient unit, five-bed residential aged care space, and acute and non-acute spaces.

The current hospital has six beds or available bed alternatives, with only one doctor and 16 nurses staffed, as of June 2022.

A replacement helipad with also be built on the new site, with the existing pad site being used to make way for the new facility.

Darling Downs Health Board chair Mike Horan AM said the announcement was “incredibly important for the town and the community it services”.

“Our focus will be ensuring these projects are completed to a high standard and that the outcome is exactly what is needed in the community,” Mr Horan said.

The incoming hospital is the third major infrastructure project secured by the state government, with Tara and Toowoomba to receive new hospitals in the coming years.

“It’s an exciting time for not only us as a Health Service, but for the whole community,” Darling Downs Health chief executive Annette Scott PSM said.

“We’ll be keeping our staff and community informed as these activities progress and I’m looking forward to seeing these projects delivered.”
