Salem aged care facility in South Toowoomba, which is run by Lutheran Services, has finished the first stage of the upgrade.
Rooms for 40 residents have now been made larger and more accessible for greater comfort and space during family visits.
Aged care service manager Judith Bannerman said residents were excited to see the next stages finished, which would including community spaces and even a hair and beauty salon.
“An enthusiastic resident committee were key consultants on every design decision throughout the project,” she said.
“They were keen on enjoying the type of spaces they valued, so there’s some great nods to the 60s and 70s with the colours and decor.
“There are nostalgic elements, but all overlaid with modern facilities, and they cannot wait to use the bar, which opens in a few weeks.”
Stage three is currently under way, which will deliver a new entrance and administration area, a GP clinic, a hair and beauty salon, as well as a new lift to improve access.
Ms Bannerman said the outdoor dining space would also be completed as part of the section.
The six-stage refurbishment was architecturally designed by leading Queensland firm Paynters.
The project is expected to be completed by end March 2021.
