Council approves new supermarket for Cambooya, southwest of Toowoomba
A growth area just outside Toowoomba will get a new supermarket, after plans were approved by the council this week.

Applicant A and D Superfund has been approved for a shopping centre proposal on Eton St in Cambooya, which would knock down the current Cambooya Store and News and build a new Foodworks shop on the same site.
“It was desirable to be able to keep the original shop, but this really is not possible,” the planning report by BCERT Consulting said.
“In these modern times, people expect a supermarket to be cool in temperature and the current shed is far from this.
“Unfortunately it will be demolished as it is merely a steel shed which is extremely hot and also has asbestos walls.
“All attempts are being made to replicate the original building as much as possible, while also allowing for security, hence only providing one entry point.”
The plans were first lodged nearly a year ago, but requests for further information from council officers and requests from the applicant to extend the decision making period prolonged the process.
According to the assessment report by Toowoomba Regional Council acting senior planner Peter Swan, the new supermarket would be 500 sqm, include 12 parking bays and feature landscaping along the northern boundary, the site frontage and around the perimeter.
“The proposed development generally complies with the assessment benchmarks or it can be conditioned to comply,” his report said.
The council attached more than 100 conditions for the applicant to follow to ensure the development met the planning scheme.
