Design work for a multimillion dollar upgrade of GMHBA Stadium’s connectivity due by year’s end

As part of multimillion dollar upgrades at Kardinia Park, the Cats’ home ground is set to have technology similar to some of the world’s best stadiums. Here’s the timeline of the works.

Design work on a multimillion dollar upgrade to improve GMHBA Stadium’s connectivity – similar to that rolled out at several new stadiums in the US – is expected to be completed by year’s end.

This masthead revealed in December of Optus’ plans to install advanced 5G technology on a stadium rooftop to enhance mobile network capacity and performance, particularly during peak traffic periods like Cats games.

Work is also being done on upgrading four towers outside the ground.

This masthead understands the revamp is similar to a rollout which occurred at new stadiums in the US as Telstra continues to work on the design of the new system to improve reception at the ground.

Connectivity has been an issue at the ground for many years with fans calling for free wi-fi back in 2018 following reportedly disastrous mobile and data service in June of that year.

Telstra is also upgrading surrounding neighbourhood infrastructure to benefit patrons in the precinct and surrounding suburbs while Optus is working on new antennas.

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said it was having ongoing discussions with the Cats and ground managers, the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust to improve coverage inside the stadium.

Meanwhile, an Optus spokesperson said it was committed to upgrading connectivity at upgrading GMHBA Stadium and the surrounding areas and it was working through all the “necessary phases”.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust revealed an extra 36 access points for consumer wi-fi were installed under the stage five redevelopment of the ground – the new Joel Selwood Stand – according to its most annual report, providing a “more robust service”.
