A “deep” sinkhole deemed a public safety risk has limited access to a popular beach in Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road.
The walking trail from the Point Roadknight Beach carpark to Guvvos Beach was closed after a large sinkhole appeared on Thursday morning.
Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority shared a post to social media revealing that the sinkhole may have been caused by a stormwater drain under the sand dunes.
An investigation by the Surf Coast Shire Council is under way to determine the exact cause.
Guvvos Beach remains accessible via a walking track off Melba Parade, located between Eighth and Twelfth Ave.
Members of the public planning to visit Guvvos Beach are advised to follow the signage.
The Surf Coast Shire Council is responsible for repairing the track and has been contacted for comment.
Just last month, a separate sinkhole disrupted traffic on a busy road in Ocean Grove, after it was stumbled upon by an off-duty police officer.
Police, SES and Geelong council were called to the sinkhole on Bonnyvale Rd just after 2.30pm on Saturday, June 7.
The sinkhole was less than half a metre wide at the opening when discovered, but closer inspection revealed a large hollow area under the surface of the road.
Groups of children, locals and long weekend visitors watched on as SES volunteers widened the hole to fill it in.
