Dedication to community recognised at award ceremony

TWO Darling Downs men were recognised by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey for their dedication to our community.

More than than 120 Queenslanders will be presented with awards and honours under the Australian honours system at six ceremonies this week.

The first ceremony was held yesterday at Government House.

Crows Nest’s Raymond Ashford and Clifton’s Frank Benjamin were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division.

All award winners were nominated by community members who believe their presence is of value to the Darling Downs region.

Mr Frank Benjamin was awarded for his contributions to the merino sheep industry through his membership of the Merino Stud Breeder’ Association including terms as chairman and secretary.

He was also applauded for his many years of service as the chief steward of the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland in Toowoomba.

Mr Ashford was recognised for his commitment and voluntary service to the tourism industry, especially in relation to Queensland’s pioneering heritage, vintage vehicles and Clydesdale horses.

His work at the Highfields Pioneer Village and the Crows Nest and District Tourist and Progress Association was also mentioned.

The Australian honours system is the pre-eminent way Australians recognise the achievements and services of citizens.
