In 2014 a man died after the branch of an African mahogany tree in Gardens Park Golf Links fell and struck him.

The incident led to the immediate removal of the tree and an inquest into his death.

Seven years later a two-tonne branch from another African mahogany tree fell onto a vehicle in Darwin CBD, resulting in the tree being cut down to prevent further danger.

The fallen branch had broken the mirror and window of a rental van.

Several years ago, Darwin council formed a Tree Re-establishment Advisory Committee, which developed a list of trees that should and should not be planted.

It is not yet known what species of tree led to the death at George Brown Botanic Gardens.

The investigation remains ongoing.
