More than 500 guests turned out for It’s A Bloke Thing, one of Toowoomba’s most exclusive events to raise critical funds for prostate cancer research.
Guests at the event at Wellcamp Airport were surprised to see country music singer Shannon Noll take the stage as well as comedian Dave Hughes, Aussie TV presenter Erin Molan and more special guests throughout the day.
It’s a Bloke Thing education program facilitator Ruth Logan said the 2023 edition of the annual event was a massive success, raising more than $80,000 by press time on Friday.
“My line has been, I get men to tackle their tackle,” she said.
“Thanks to our sponsors, supporters, and the Toowoomba community we have raised more than $12 million over the past few years.”
Ms Logan said she was passionate about advocating for prostate cancer awareness as many of her family members had suffered from the disease.
“Awareness is very important as early detection saves lives, it’s a silent disease, and usually by the time symptoms arise the cancer is quite progressed,” she said.
“It is the most common cancer diagnosis in Australia with 10 people dying every day.”
Mrs Logan said the culture was changing and people were getting more comfortable talking about the issue and getting checked – especially now that it only required a blood test and not a prostate examination.
She said men who had a history of prostate cancer should discuss it with their doctor, however everyone should get checked when they reached the age of 50.
The Wagners’ It’s a Bloke Thing Toowoomba luncheon and national fundraiser is aimed at breaking the cycle of the ‘She’ll Be Right’ mindset.
