UPDATE: Police say dash cam footage from a truck involved in a fatal crash showed the driver had no time to avoid a head-on collision.
Dalby police shift supervisor Senior Constable Brad Allen said the Caltex fuel tanker was heading east when an oncoming Toyota Prius crossed into its path.
"The car has veered onto the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with the truck," Snr Const. Allen said.
Emergency services were called to the Warrego Hwy scene at 12.25am today.
The Prius driver, a 54-year-old Hamilton man, died at the scene.
Snr Const. Allen said dash cam footage showed the horror in its entirety.
"He (the truck driver) had no time to take evasive action but he did hit his brakes."
Investigations will focus on why the Prius driver was on the wrong side of the highway.
"The reason for that is the only question at this time."
The truck driver, from the Lockyer Valley, was not injured.
"He was quite shaken but not physically hurt."
Snr Const. Allen said he believed the fuel tanker was empty at the time of the crash.
The highway was closed in both directions before being opened to one lane.
Traffic was flowing in both directions about 8.30am.
Efforts were this morning being made to contact the Prius driver's next of kin.

10.30AM: The Warrego Hwy has reopened after a man was killed when the sedan he was driving collided with a truck west of Toowoomba.
The crash occurred about 12.25am 2km west of Bowenville.
The 54-year-old man died at the scene. The male truck driver was not injured.
TODAY 6.40AM: Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a man, early this morning.
About 12.25am a car and a prime mover collided on the Warrego Highway, 2km west of Bowenville.
The male driver of the car died at the scene.
The male driver of the prime mover was not physically injured during the incident.
One lane of the Warrego Hwy remains closed this morning with westbound traffic diverted via Bowenville-Norwin Rd and eastbound traffic diverted at Dalby-Cecil Plains turnoff.
The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing investigations.
