Darwin’s rich multicultural fabric was on full display as families gathered at the Malak Community Centre for a special Harmony Day event on Thursday, March 20.
Hosted by City of Darwin as part of its popular Fun Bus program, the event celebrated diversity and inclusion with a packed morning of cultural performances, interactive workshops, and family-friendly entertainment.
Attendees embraced the spirit of the day by wearing “orange” or “traditional attire”.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis highlighted Darwin’s status as one of Australia’s most diverse cities, with more than 60 nationalities represented.
“The Harmony Day event at the Fun Bus was a great chance to come together and celebrate people from all different backgrounds and cultures,” he said.
Families enjoyed flower weaving, an African drumming workshop, a didgeridoo performance, arts and crafts, face painting, and a performance by Baby Ballerinas.
The World Café Taster served an array of global cuisine, featuring everything from samosas to lamingtons.
Jane Collins, supervisor of Family and Children Services at City of Darwin, highlighted the role of the Fun Bus in strengthening community ties.
“Darwin is very transitional. Families come and build networks with other families, and we provide support to over 100 families in Darwin,” she said.
Gillian Work, an administrator for the Territory Child Care Group, said the World Café was a highlight.
“The World Café brings food from around the world like samosas and Thai noodles, but we make sure to include Aussie classics like sausages and lamingtons,” she said.
“It’s great to see all the different cultures coming together at this event.”
Helen Maragaos, a regular attendee of Fun Bus mobile playgroup events, praised the inclusive nature of the day.
“It’s a fun, free event that all kids will enjoy,” she said.
The event, supported by Early Childhood Australia and Territory Child Care Group Inc., ran from 9am to 12pm at Malak Community Centre.
