Darwin man Adrian Bara jailed for bashing partner

Drunk and jealous, a Darwin man unleashed a “relentless” attack on his girlfriend in plain view of the public, punching and kicking her while she lay on the ground. After pleading guilty, the man’s conduct was shredded by a Judge, who called the horrific attack “outrageous”.

Drunk and jealous, a Darwin man unleashed a “relentless” attack on his girlfriend in open view, punching and kicking her while she lay on the ground.

On Monday afternoon at Darwin Local Court, Adrian Bara pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in relation to an incident on July 11.

The court heard that at about 5.30pm on July 11, Bara had been drinking with his friends and his partner around Coconut Grove when he became “irate” and “jealous” of her.

Sensing Bara’s change of mood, the woman broke away from him and started walking along Dick Ward Drive in the direction of Nightcliff.

Bara followed the woman into Litchfield Court, where he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her down onto the concrete.

In front of multiple witnesses, Bara bashed the woman, punching and kicking her head and body.

Minutes later, police arrived on scene and arrested Bara.

The woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Sitting in the dock, Bara, 35, showed no emotion as the details of his assault were read to the courtroom.

“The attack (was) relentless,” the prosecutor said.

“The defendant showed a clear intent to cause the victim harm.”

Bara’s lawyer said her client had little recollection of bashing the woman.

“This is serious offending, he doesn’t shy away from that,” she said.

“He accepts that it occurred, but he says he was so intoxicated that he has little memory of the events.”

The court heard Bara had “limited criminal history” and his lawyer asked that her client be given a suspended sentence.

Before handing down his sentence, Judge Alan Woodcock called the behaviour “outrageous”.

“You need to get the message,” he told Bara.

“This will not be tolerated.”

Bara was given a 15 months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of eight months.
