Darwin bub’s ‘epic arrival’ in Royal Darwin Hospital carpark

Two excited parents couldn’t wait for the arrival of their new baby and it turns out neither could the bub. Read their unique and exciting birth story.

Earning herself a “thumbs up” from bystanders, Lindsey Newman gave birth to a healthy baby girl in the Royal Darwin Hospital carpark.

Nainsí Dominique Louise O’Donnell was born 16 days early at 7.32pm on Tuesday night and weighed 3.469kg.

Ms Newman said Nainsí’s “epic arrival” just five metres from her parked car was one of the craziest experiences of her life.

“I had a midwife pretty much just catch her as she fell out in the carpark of the hospital, so I didn’t make it inside,” she said.

“I just stood up, and there were a few people around having a good watch.

“I think some guy gave us a thumbs up at the end and was like, ‘well done’.”

Her water broke about 6.35pm but Ms Newman and partner Ruairí O’Donnell did not leave for the hospital until 7.08pm when a friend arrived to care for their other two children.

Ms Newman contacted the delivery suite during the trip because she thought they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time.

“They were absolutely fantastic, they spoke to me all the way until we got to the hospital,” she said.

“It was unbelievable, I think she came literally within an hour, less than an hour, of my water breaking.”

Pronounced ‘Nancy’, Ms Newman said her third child’s name was “spelled the Irish way because Dad’s Irish”.
