Croc on the loose in Marlow Lagoon

Updated - January 24: Traps have only just been set for the saltwater crocodile seen by a woman and her dog at a popular dog walking spot in Palmerston, despite the council being aware of its existence for at least a week.

In a Facebook post on January 23, resident Kaye Pam uploaded two photos – one of her dog, Turbo, in the water and another of what is believed to be one-metre long saltwater crocodile – to the Marlow Lagoon Dog Park Palmerston NT page.

City of Palmerston uploaded a video of the same croc to Facebook on January 17, six days prior to Ms Pam’s post, and claimed it had been reported to the NT Crocodile Management Team.

City of Palmerston did not answer questions from this masthead as to what had been done to capture the croc, why it had taken more than a week for action to be taken and what would be done in future like circumstances.

A spokeswoman for Parks and Wildlife NT said two crocs traps had been set and rangers would actively check the traps.

“We’ve set to traps out, we have rangers checking them frequently and rebaiting them”, she said.

“It’s our understanding there is only one croc.”

Ms Pam was also contacted for comment.

An anonymous commenter on her post alleged the croc had been sighted a “week or two” ago.

On January 17, City of Palmerston uploaded to Facebook a video of a croc sighting at Marlow Lagoon and said it had been reported to the NT Crocodile Management Team.

It is unclear if the croc was captured.

Scott Burden, another member of the page, later made a post claiming it was “definitely” a saltie and thanked Ms Pam for alerting others.

Other commenters also thanked Ms Pam for her post.

“There would be no way in hell I would risk my dog going in there,” one said.

“You can tell everyone that it’s safe as much as you want but you’re risking your fur baby’s life, that’s a no from me.”
