Cracker Night sparks 393 fires across the NT, all are under control

Fireys were called to hundreds of fires across the NT overnight as the historical Cracker Night tradition celebrating Territory Day took place.

Fires in Rosebery on Territory Day

FIREYS were called to more than 300 fires across the NT overnight, including 15 bin/rubbish blazes in a “concerning” increase in fire activity.

In total between 6pm and 11pm on Sunday there were 313 grassfires, 15 bin/rubbish fires, four structure fires reported, one hazmat incident, one road crash rescue, one automatic fire alarm and two smoke complaints.

Authorities were also concerned with a large fire in Durack, resulting in the temporary closure of Tiger Brennan Dr.

NT Fire Rescue Service (NTFRS) Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said the increase in incidents was problematic.

“In 2019, the NTFRS responded to 219 grassfires over a two-day period during Territory Day celebrations,” he said.

“Our career, volunteer and auxiliary firefighters worked above and beyond to limit damage to property. It’s a testament to the commitment of our members who serve and protect our community”.

Police were also kept busy with multiple reports of misuse of fireworks from vehicles. Five cautions were issued for the use of fireworks outside of the approved period time.

Police also conducted patrols at the Mindil Beach event and there was no reported injuries or significant incidents.

There is currently a high to very high fire danger across the Top End and low to moderate elsewhere. NTFRS has increased crewing in the greater Darwin region on Monday to provide additional response capability if needed.
