A renewable energy company has lodged plans for a meteorological mast in Captains Mountain in order to investigate the suitability of a site for a possible future wind farm.
In a development application lodged with Toowoomba Regional Council, Wind Power Development Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Danish energy company Vestas Wind Systems is proposing a 105m high mast on land at 9426 Gore Hwy, Captains Mountain, southwest of Millmerran.
The mast will be used “for the purposes of climatic monitoring associated with the investigation of site suitability for the possible future establishment of a wind farm”.
The application noted that the establishment of the mast did not confirm that a wind farm would “ultimately be established” on the site.
“Any subsequent decision to establish a wind farm on the site in the future is subject to further development approval, and a range of commercial and physical considerations, not least of which is the demonstrated meteorological suitability of the site for such purposes.”
The single mast will consist of a triangular steel lattice construction, supported by guy wires.
The mast will be equipped with wind and weather sensors at various heights, which will allow for measurements of meteorological data including wind speed, wind direction, wind shear, wind turbulence and air density.
The mast is intended to be temporary, with a lifespan of up to five years.
The council is assessing the application.
