A major upgrade to one of the Toowoomba region’s premier lookout sites is nearly complete, according to the council.
The Tobruk Memorial Drive lookout site, not far from Picnic Point, has been under a seven-figure upgrade since work started in June this year.
The upgrade and replacement of the old lookout is part of the Toowoomba Regional Council’s $7.4 million Toowoomba Escarpment Parks Upgrades project.
Environment and community portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon said the new lookout should be open by next month.
“The Tobruk Drive Lookout project is nearing completion with the lookout expected to be opened to the public in mid-December, weather permitting,” he said.
“The new boardwalk will provide an amazing viewing experience with fantastic escarpment and Table Top Mountain views available from the new lookout.
“Once completed, the project will enable increased participation in recreation activities by targeting local users, visitors to the region, sports enthusiasts and the nature-based, adventure tourism market.”
Cr McMahon said the council had to overcome several obstacles to deliver the project.
“A lot of work has gone into the lookout and the project team must be commended for the work they’ve undertaken so far,” he said.
“They’ve overcome significant challenges throughout the delivery, particularly the need to modify the location and design of the elevated boardwalk foundation piers to avoid and protect tree roots and accommodate terrain constraints.”
