Toowoomba’s landmarks will light up blue in solidarity with Israel

This week Toowoomba’s key landmarks will turn blue to stand with Israel following the attacks in Gaza over the weekend.

What is Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran's Role in the Israel Conflict?

In a sign of respect and solidarity with Israel, Toowoomba landmarks will be lit up in blue after weekend attacks by Hamas in Gaza that killed hundreds in some of the worst bloodshed the region has seen in 50 years.

Over the weekend hundreds of Hamas fighters crossed the Gaza border and rampaged through at least 20 Israeli communities in a combined land, air and sea operation that caught Israel off guard.

From tonight, Victoria Street Bridge, the Toowoomba City Hall and the city hall’s annex will be illuminated blue.

Toowoomba mayor Geoff McDonald said Toowoomba was a refugee welcome zone, boasting a strong Israeli and Jewish community.

“Our thoughts are with those impacted in any way by this atrocity”, Mr McDonald said.

“The atrocities that have, and are, occurring in Israel at the hands of the Hamas terrorist group have shocked the world.

“In time we will explore other ways we can support the Israeli community, particularly those here in Toowoomba who have family back home who may have been impacted.”

According to the country’s media, more than 700 Israelis have been killed and more than 2000 injured.
