Residents will be redirected through a new temporary facility entrance at Kleinton from Thursday, October 22.

Water and waste portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the Kleinton Waste Management Facility was transforming into the region’s first tier two facility and is anticipated to be opened for operations by the end of 2020.

Cr Sommerfield said the TRC it would provide great environmental benefits, including increased opportunities for recycling.

“The new Kleinton facility is a modern waste facility, providing a nicer experience plus greater opportunities for improved waste management, all the while maintaining our high service level where 98 per cent of the region’s population lives within a 20-minute drive of a waste management facility,” she said.

“Designed on a smaller scale of the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility, residents will segregate their waste throughout the site at three different zones – bulk materials, resource recovery area and residual waste.

“The new facility will be the fifth project delivered under the waste infrastructure plan and the council is looking forward to assisting the community navigate their way around it.”

Cr Sommerfield said construction had steamed ahead during the challenging year, adding she was delighted that we’ve reached the point where years of landfill has been successfully capped and rehabilitated.

“Rehabilitation involves capping of the old landfill area with 1.5m of material, including a geosynthetic clay liner, clay fill and cover soil,” she said.

“The capping provides a permanent barrier protecting the groundwater below the site.

“The new temporary entrance will be used while the final alignment is constructed.

“We ask that residents obey all signage.”
