The Toowoomba Regional Council has agreed to sponsor a major sporting championship, which organisers say will inject more than $500,000 into the local economy.

Councillors voted at the Wednesday committee mee

ting to commit $10,000 to the 2021 Basketball Queensland Under 14 Boys State Championships, which will be held in the first week of July.

The funding came through the council’s Sports Tourism Event Grant program, with the assessment panel agreeing to double the usual sponsorship amount due to the perceived economic benefit.

The Toowoomba Basketball Association had asked for $23,000.

The championships, which haven’t been held in Toowoomba for more than a decade, are expected to invest $569,000 into the economy.

Councillor Carol Taylor welcomed the motion, saying the event would be a major financial and social driver.
