A large park central to a small town north of Toowoomba will enjoy a major revitalisation from the council, after its masterplan was endorsed.
The Toowoomba Regional Council voted at Wednesday’s committee meeting to support the plan for the 1.4-hectare Pioneer Park in Goombungee.
The project, valued at more than $1m, will improve a variety of aspects including activity nodes, improved recreational amenities and internal park footpath connections.
Council landscape architect Alison Banks’ report said the masterplan would also include the refreshing of certain existing infrastructure at the park, including a swing set and the toilet block.
“Although Pioneer Park contains a range of existing infrastructure that supports the presentation of the park to a standard such as modern picnic facilities, much of the older infrastructure is over 20 years old and in poor condition and/ or not operating at a capacity suitable for increased patronage,” she wrote.
“To ensure a consistent amenity of the park these renewals/replacements are beneficial to be undertaken in a time frame closely matching other proposed capital works identified.”
Goombungee residents were supportive of the project during community consultation, with participants prioritising play areas for older children, a new toilet block, plenty of shady trees and a new barbecue area.
Environment and community portfolio leader Tim McMahon praised officers’ efforts in developing the plan.
