Toowoomba Regional Council releases list of properties up for auction due to unpaid rates, charges

An Oakey parcel of land connected to a debt of more than $145,000 in unpaid rates is among nearly 60 properties across the region that are set to go up for auction this year by the Toowoomba Regional Council.
The council’s finance and business strategy department this week brought forward its first “sale of land” list since the Covid-19 pandemic last year, detailing 56 titles in arrears with rates and charges totalling nearly $1m.
Councillors endorsed the list at its Wednesday committee meeting, with the properties slated to go under the hammer in November.
The most notable sums included a $145,000 unpaid rates bill for a lot on Fitzpatrick Street in Oakey, which has been outstanding for more than four years.
Other amounts included a $62,000 debt on a property at Hillview Avenue in Newtown and $46,000 for a South Toowoomba site on Ruthven Street.
However, council rates and revenue principal Shayne Morris said the vast majority of property owners managed to pay their overdue rates before their land actually made it to auction.
“Historically, probably each year, the auction gets down to about four properties and they are normally vacant land, land that’s normally somewhat unloved,” he said.
“History shows that houses normally get sorted out and generally that’s because most properties are mortgaged and where the landowner refuses or is unable to pay, the mortgagee will step in to protect their interests.”
Mr Morris said the council was always willing to work with landholders if there were circumstances that prevented them paying.
The motion was carried unanimously.
