The Toowoomba Regional Council will start work installing traffic lights at a busy intersection.

Construction to improve the safety of a busy intersection near several schools in Harristown will start this week.

Toowoomba Regional Council infrastructure chair Cr Carol Taylor said the upgrade of South and Burton St would improve the overall operation and safety of the intersection and would cater for future traffic demands.

The intersection is near to Harristown State School, Harristown State High School and Concordia Lutheran College.

“This upgrade is one of the projects that will make the area safer for the community including students, parents and staff who use the busy intersection daily,” Cr Taylor said.

“The project includes the installation of traffic signals, removing the existing pedestrian crossing, upgrading street lighting and replacing asphalt and associated line marking.

“For safety reasons, right-turn movements from Burton St are currently prohibited between 7am and 9am and 2pm and 4pm on school days (buses excepted).

“This project will enable motorists to safely turn right from Burton St into South St.”

Cr Taylor said the project was being delivered through the council’s Pandemic Response Investment program.

“Funding of $450,000 has been allocated to the project through the Queensland Government’s School Transport Infrastructure program,” she said.

“The upgrade is one of the projects being accelerated to stimulate economic activity across the region.

“Local suppliers are being engaged where possible to deliver the program.”

Toowoomba Regional Council in good financial position

Construction is expected to be completed by late March 2021, weather permitting.

Work will be undertaken at night from Monday to Friday between the hours of 6pm and 6am, with weekend work may also be required.

There will be single lane closures in place during work hours with controllers to manage traffic flow.

Toowoomba-based engineering, design and project management consultancy Harrison Infrastructure Group has been engaged to design and manage the delivery of the upgrade.
