Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio has welcomed the lifting of the Greater Brisbane lockdown ahead of the Easter weekend, but urged residents to remain vigilant around masks.
The state’s largest population centre will now be able to continue with holiday plans across the state, in what is shaping as a boost for businesses.
Indoor mask wearing will still be required for the next two weeks.
Cr Antonio said he wanted to see residents following the rules across the weekend.
“The lifting of restrictions is good news for the tourism industry and good news for small businesses,” he said.
“This is a chance for people to get out and visit Toowoomba and the Darling Downs – the whole area is open for business.
“Follow the rules and make sure you do, because we’ve been fortunate and I’m confident things will continue to be good (if we do).
“The people of Brisbane would no doubt enjoy our streets and parks, and I’d encourage people to check out the Granite Belt and Goodndiwindi, or up through Crows Nest on the New England Highway.”
With the Easter long weekend often a notorious period for highway collisions, Cr Antonio also urged everyone to use good road sense.
“We need to be extremely cautious on the roads, so watch the roads and follow the rules,” he said.
“(Tragic) things (can) happen at Easter time, so I’d encourage people to go out and enjoy the countryside but do so safely.”
