Toowoomba’s own UFC star Tom “Big Train” Nolan has arrived in Las Vegas in preparation for this weekend’s big fight.
The 23-year-old left Brisbane on Sunday on a flight to the entertainment capital of the world where he will fight Brazilian Nikolas Motta early this coming Sunday morning Toowoomba time.
“I’m always nervous before he fights but I’m really edgy for this one,” Tom’s father Kev “Nobby” Nolan told The Chronicle.
“I’m sure he’ll go well though.”
Mr Nolan senior will be joined by a large crowd of family, friends and fight fans who will gather at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba on the morning of January 14 to watch the fight live from the US.
“Tom’s older brother Luke will be going over later in the week and he’ll be in Tom’s corner during the fight, so that too will be pretty exciting,” Mr Nolan said.
“The City Golf Club sponsors Tom and they’ve got promotional photos of him in the club and it should be a great morning.”
The fight, which is Tom Nolan’s debut in the prized UFC, will be held on Saturday night Las Vegas time and beamed via sports channel ESPN around the world.
Tom Nolan, who was voted Australia’s Fighter of the Year, told The Chronicle before his departure that he was feeling confident about the fight.
“I feel the best I’ve ever felt leading into this fight, never trained so good before,” he said.
The City Golf Club will open its doors from 6.45am Sunday with the preliminary fights scheduled to start about 7am Toowoomba time.
The club’s Café Gold will be open bright and early serving tea, coffee and the usual menu items to fuel the excitement leading up to the big fight.
