UPDATE: Organisers of the vigil for Thomas Coyne have cancelled the Wednesday night event, out of respect for Thomas' family.

EARLIER: A candlelight vigil and special tribute will be held this week to honour the memory of a Toowoomba activist and marriage equality advocate, after his tragic death last week.

Thomas Coyne, who ran for the Greens last year in the State Election and was one of the city’s leading campaigners for same-sex marriage during the 2017 postal vote campaign, was killed in a car crash near Allora on April 12.

Tributes flowed from across the political spectrum, with LNP Deputy Leader David Janetzki, Greens Senator Larissa Waters and several Labor figures expressing their sadness.

Toowoomba councillor Megan O’Hara Sullivan revealed a vigil would be held at the

McCrum Lane car park, near Chalk Drive, in the CBD on Wednesday from 5.15pm.

Cr O’Hara Sullivan said she had also arranged for the Victoria Street bridge to be lit up in rainbow colours in his memory.

“I would like to extend an open invitation to all those people who would like to honour the extraordinary life of Thomas Coyne,” she wrote.

Fellow activist, Greens figure and Alyce Nelligan had described Mr Coyne as a tireless advocate for progressive politics.

“Thomas was a bright light in this world — he was relentlessly committed to doing good,” she said.
