The good news is that Toowoomba should welcome in 2024 tonight under fine weather but the Bureau of Meteorology warns that there could be some light showers – just the thing for a midnight rendition of “Singing in the Rain”.
Saturday showers brought about 3.4mm at Toowoomba Airport but farther west in the Dalby region a more substantial 11mm was recorded around Dalby while Miles had 18mm and Mitchell 12mm.
Tara recorded some hailstones of about 4cm to 5cm at about 10am on Saturday while just north of Chinchilla hail of 6cm fell about noon.
However, according to BOM senior meteorologist Steve Hadley, Toowoomba should enjoy a relatively fine last day of 2023 with a few showers and possibly even a storm into the first day of 2024.
“Potentially there could be some storms on the Darling Downs to the Granite Belt but most storm activity will be west of Millmerran and around Goondiwindi, St George and Roma,” he said.
Mr Hadley said the storms should be slow moving leading to some good rainfalls and possibly some hail.
Toowoomba should ring in the New Year at midnight with a “possibility” of some rainfall through a light shower with January 1 to be pretty much more of the same with ”garden variety” showers throughout the first week of 2024, he said.
The first day of 2024 should range in temperatures from 18 to a pleasant 24 degrees in Toowoomba with Warwick ranging from 17 to 26, Dalby from 19 to 28, Stanthorpe a very pleasant 16 to 24 while Goondiwindi will heat things up a bit with temperatures from a minimum of 21 to a maximum of 31 onr January 1.
