When Simran Dahal moved to Toowoomba from Nepal in 2019 to study nursing, she never planned on staying.
“The plan was to come to Toowoomba and move to Brisbane, but it was just so lovely,” the 23-year-old registered nurse said.
“Toowoomba people are so lovely – they don’t make you feel like an outsider.
“I’m now a permanent resident, and I refuse to move from Toowoomba.
“I’ve told that to many people I know, I want to raise a family here.”
Ms Dahal said it was the Garden City’s embrace of multiculturalism that helped convince her to stay, something that was on show at the Luminous In The Regions event outside the Empire Theatre on Saturday night.
The free event by Multicultural Australia saw more than 100 participants celebrate the city’s diversity by making and lighting candles.
Ms Dahal had two special guests joining her in parents Tara and Bhupati, who are visiting Australia for the first time.
“Nepal has got mountains and hills, so (Toowoomba being on a mountain) reminds them of their home place, where they grew up,” she said.
“I’ve been taking them around the city, and they are loving it.”
MA regional director Kelly Hogan-Buckingham said the event was about connecting Toowomba’s diverse community in one place.
“People could bring lanterns they’d made or come along on the day from 3pm to make lanterns,” she said.
“At 6pm, we all got together, had the speeches, lit the lanterns and went for a walk around the block.
“It’s about community connections and making sure everyone feels they belong.”
