A national fundraiser aimed at breaking the cycle of the ‘She’ll Be Right’ mindset, raised a whopping amount for cancer research last week.
The Wagners’ Its a Bloke Thing Toowoomba luncheon was supported by more than 540 people on Friday, with a whopping $1,428,456 raised towards beating prostate cancer.
“It was incredible,” chairman Brad Fitzgibbons said.
“We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the support of the wider regions and Darling Downs community.”
During its 11-year commitment, the foundation has raised more than $13M towards spreading awareness and funding research into the debilitating disease.
“Men’s health is so important, and it needs to be spoken about a bit more,” Mr Fitzgibbons said.
“Early detection and getting tested is key.”
The foundation travels through rural Queensland and the Northern Territory attempting to educate men and women about the cruel cancer.
Mr Fitzgibbons said it was crucial to try to break the mindset of “she’ll be right”, and putting off getting tested.
“Due to a lack of resources in regional areas, regional blokes have a 24 per cent higher chance of poor outcomes associated with prostate cancer,” he said.
“If we can get to (the women in our lives), they’re more likely to push us in the right direction and push us to get tested.
“Sixty-six men are diagnosed each day with prostate cancer.”
The event at the Wellcamp Airport tied in closely with the country atmosphere, and featured singers Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley, Brad Cox, Sammy White and Luke Geiger.
Rugby League legend Trevor Gillmeister spoke to the crowd about his personal experience with prostate cancer, and celebrity chef Alastair McLeod and sports journalist Ben Dobbin were also on site to speak with guests.
