A celebration of Hare Krishna culture, music and religion was showcased at Toowoomba’s Civic Square on Sunday for the city’s first Krishna Janmashtami festival in three years.
Hundreds packed out the space for the event, which was organised by the Brisbane branch of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan Australia.
Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna in the Hare Krishna community, Hare Krishna being a branch of the Hindu religion.
It’s the first time the festival had been held in Toowoomba since 2019 due to Covid-19.
Attendees enjoyed food stalls, as well as an exhibition on Indian cultural heritage, devotional group performances, dancing and skits.
It comes as more Hindis are calling Toowoomba home, with 2021 Census data revealing the faith’s population had grown to 2160 people since 2016.
