A larger than expected crowd attended International Day of Peace celebrations in Toowoomba’s Civic Square on Saturday.

Supported by Pure Land Learning College, the annual Day of Peace is organised the Toowoomba Peace Committee.

“It is certainly bigger than last year,” Toowoomba Peace Committee chair Dr Uma Kumar said.

“We really can’t have peace unless people unite and peace is all about unity.

“Noone does this for any expectation, they do it for the joy.

“Every year we would love this to grow and grow.

“Toowoomba is now a very diverse community and events like this helps to break down the barrier of difference.”

Peace Day this year brought together a range of community groups including Pure Land Learning College, Toowoomba Regional Council, Lions International, Bunya Park Scouts, TIMS (Toowoomba International Multicultural Society), Goodwill Committee Toowoomba, NDIS, UNAA, and TYP. G (Toowoomba Youth Peace Group).

The day was filled with colour, music and traditional dancing from the various cultural groups.

Dr Kumar said it was hoped such days would help bring all of the community together.

“Hopefully, people will walk away from this inspired to make some small changes,” she said.
