Australian Greens promise to build 3000 social housing dwellings in Toowoomba

A political party has promised to build 3000 more social housing dwellings in Toowoomba over the next four years if the party succeeds at the next election

The Australian Greens has promised to build 3000 more social housing dwellings in Toowoomba over the next four years if the party succeeds at the next election, which would resettle the 1300 people currently on the local waitlist.

Senator Larissa Waters announced the policy promise during visits to Toowoomba social enterprises like Emerge and Tony’s Community Kitchen on Thursday.

Senator Waters said the Greens pledge was part of a promise to build one million more social housing dwellings over the next 20 years.

“(Of the) one million social homes over the next 20 years we would build, Toowoomba would get 6000 of those, (so) we would clear that housing waiting list, we would make sure that there is no one without a home,” she said.

The party also used the visit to push the campaign of lead Senate candidate for Queensland Penny Allman-Payne.

Ms Allman-Payne, a teacher and union organiser based in Gladstone, hopes to ensure the Greens can secure the balance of power in the Senate at the expense of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation.
