The region’s premier Christmas event has opened to great success, drawing the biggest ever opening crowd in its 20-year history.
Toowoomba’s Christmas Wonderland hosted by the Toowoomba West Lions Club opened in Queens Park on Saturday to uproarious crowds, with more than 3500 people walking through the gates.
“It was our largest crowd for opening night ever,” Lions Club president Marshall Cox said.
“It’s incredible, we had some good weather, and I think people put this on their Christmas calendars as something to do each year.”
Alongside the fantastical light displays, holograms and free food – for those blessed with youth – visitors were treated to the dulcet tones of the St Mary’s College Concert Band and Choir.
“The entertainment was fantastic,” Mr Cox said.
“And that’s only one representation of the quality of the entertainment we have lined up for the next three weeks.”
With 725 volunteer roles to fill each year, hosting the event is certainly a labour of love.
“Our goal is to provide a very affordable Christmas event for the whole family,” Mr Cox said.
“We always change the design each year … so when people come, they see something different.
“It’s a hard slog getting it up, but once we do the members of the club and the volunteers all acknowledge why it’s worthwhile when they see the crowds and the kids having a good time.
“It makes the hard work pale in comparison.”
Toowoomba’s Christmas Wonderland will open nightly from 7pm to 10pm until December 24, with gold coin entry.
