Colour will fill Toowoomba’s CBD this week, and it’s all for a very worthy cause.
Two of the garden city’s major landmarks – Victoria Bridge and The Annex will light up red as part of National Blood Donor Week and to celebrate the 4415 blood donors in Toowoomba.
“Each week Australia’s blood donors collectively give 31,000 donations – that’s the equivalent of a donation every 24 seconds in the time our blood donor centres are open,” Lifeblood spokeswoman Sandee Thompson said.
“From cancer patients to road trauma victims, people with blood disorders to burns victims, donated blood underpins quality healthcare in Australia.”
It takes just 24 seconds for a blood donation to meet the needs of patients across the country with each donation travelling an average of 370km.
And the Toowoomba Blood Donor Centre still needs 450 donors to make the lifesaving contribution over the next two weeks.
“This National Blood Donor Week, we want to say a huge thank you to all of our donors who made a difference and gave something back to not only their community but communities all over Australia,” Mrs Thompson said.
“Giving blood feels great, and it only takes an hour of your time … we’re calling on Toowoomba locals to make a change for life and become a blood donor.”
Toowoomba Regional Council will be turning Victoria Bridge and The Annex on Ruthven St red every night from 6pm until June 20.
