A neighbour has described the terrifying moment that a fire gutted the inside of a house in Toowoomba’s northern suburbs on Tuesday morning.

QFES Toowoomba acting station officer Dean McEwen said the fire started in a child’s bedroom at the back of the house.

Neighbour Jason Richmond said he did his best to combat the blaze.

“I smelled smoke this morning and I thought it was my house on fire,” he said.

“I told the kids and wife to get out, and then I saw my tree on fire on the corner there (and the house) and so I ran out and grabbed my garden hose.

“I tried to attack it because I was worried bits were going to fly off and land on my roof.

“It went black, it was like an inferno coming out of that (house), it was blazing out of that bedroom window.”

A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokeswoman earlier said when crews arrived at the blaze the timber family home was engulfed in flames.

The fire was extinguished by 7.20am, however firefighters continued to wet down hot spots and monitor air quality for about an hour.

The spokeswoman said a QFES investigator arrived at the scene at about 8.45am to determine the cause of the blaze.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said multiple people were assessed by paramedics, “however (they) did not sustain any injuries,”.

“(We) remained on standby as the scene was contained,” he said.

A number of police crews were also called to the scene, and a police spokeswoman noted the house fire had not impacted any other properties.
