Challenge: Brisbane comedian vows to get croc tattoo if Darwin Fringe show sells out

Most performers may choose to shave their heads or donate to charity if their shows sell out — but this Brisbane comedian has a snappier idea. Find out how you can take her up on her challenge.

Musical comedian EJ Mann is gearing up to bring her debut show MAGPIE to Darwin on July 20, and has promised to get Darwin’s unofficial mascot, the crocodile, tattooed if her show sells out.

Musical comedian EJ Mann has set an enticing challenge for Territorians that you wouldn’t want to miss: sell out my show and I’ll get a crocodile tattoo — it’s that simple.

Her debut show, MAGPIE, will come to Darwin on July 20, giving Territorians about a week to take her up on her offer.

With her guitar in hand, her debut show, Magpie, sees EJ talk — and sing — about her hilarious year living like one of Australia’s most fearless birds — and what it means to come out as a lesbian in 2025.

NZ publication Theatreview described the performance as “polished and funny” and says that EJ is “an exciting new voice to watch”.

EJ says she is excited to be part of Darwin Fringe, having always wanted to visit the NT, and says she wouldn’t mind bringing a part of the Top End home with her.

“My wife thinks I’m mad… but the croc is Darwin Fringe’s logo, and what a better way to celebrate a successful show?” she said.

“Magpie is about living authentically, about family, and it’s really close to my heart.”

Over three shows at Newcastle Fringe, EJ won the hearts of the seaside town, and What’s The Show described Magpie as “incredibly relatable and hilarious… an authentic, raw and self- exposing performance.”

EJ started comedy in 2022, when her (then secret) girlfriend signed her up for a comedy course in Brisbane.

She continued performing and making a name for herself on the Brisbane scene as a RAW State Finalist, Funny Coast Laughable Finalist and Brat Pack People’s Choice Winner.

“Eventually my friends and family wanted to come along and watch a show, so I had to tell them about my girlfriend.”

“Comedy forced me to come out, and it’s a hell of a story!”

Catch EJ in action on Sunday, July 20 at Bustard Town, 15 Knuckey Street.
