CDRL leaders Mossman-Port Douglas continued on their winning ways with a 33-20 victory over Southern Suburbs.

While the Sharks were never headed, they couldn’t completely shake off their determined opponents who belied their lowly position with a spirited display.

Southern Suburbs mained their push for a CDRL finals berth with a nervy 20-18 victory over Mossman-Port Douglas.

Fourth-placed Suburbs led 20-12 with one minute remaining before a runaway Mossman try made the last few seconds very interesting.

The new Cairns District Rugby League leaders can inch closer to the minor premiership if they defend their home turf in the match of the round on Saturday.

Mossman-Port Douglas jumped into top spot on the A-grade ladder after a wild weekend in which they got the job done against Edmonton Storm and two major rivals slipped.

Atherton and Brothers fell to Yarrabah and Ivanhoes respectively, allowing the Sharks to take a clear lead, one they want to keep when they host Southern Suburbs on Saturday.

Back-to-back premiers in 2018-19, Mossman-Port Douglas have proved they have what it takes to get the job done.

They boast the best attack in the league with 380 points in 11 games, and have shown time and again they can put on a big score in very little time.

Mossman-Port Douglas did exactly that the last time they faced Southern Suburbs, running in tries for fun in a 42-20 win at Alley Park in round 9.

Suburbs have shown plenty of fight in recent weeks, but the Sharks have proved to be on another level.

All eyes will be on Eddie Daniel, who needs just eight points to hit triple figures this season.

The reserve grade clash should be just as exciting, with fourth-placed Suburbs out to shore up their spot in the top five against a Sharks team running seventh.
