The NT Electoral Commission has officially confirmed who is running in the inaugural Groote Archipelago Regional Council election, as the region moves to form a local government independent from the mainland.

Nine candidates were declared across three wards for seven vacant positions – four of which were instantly filled.

In both the East and West wards, just two people nominated for the two vacant positions, meaning they have been automatically elected as councillors.

The three councillors for Central Ward will be decided on polling day – March 15 – between candidates Gordon Walsh, Leonard Amagula, Gregson Lalara, Rosalie Lalara, and Fabian Lalara.

The Groote council is a result of years of advocacy from locals who felt they were not being properly represented by the East Arnhem Regional Council.

Groote had three small councils until the so-called super shires were set up in 2008.

Early voting will be available at the NTEC office in Darwin weekdays from March 3 to March 14.

“With the voting period fast approaching, residents in the Groote Archipelago Regional Council area are encouraged to plan when and where they will be voting,” NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly said.

“Electors enrolled in the East Ward and West Ward are not required to vote in this election.

“Electors wanting more information about voting services in community can visit the NTEC website or contact the NT Electoral Commission office or Groote Archipelago Regional Council for information.”
