TOOWOOMBA North MP Trevor Watts has called on the Queensland Government to install point-to-point speed cameras on the Toowoomba Bypass.
Speaking in Regional Parliament in Townsville on Tuesday, Mr Watts said road safety was important.
"(The Toowoomba Bypass) may be a good candidate to have point-to-point cameras fitted to ensure that people who are going along there do it in a safe and sensible manner," Mr Watts said.
"However, both the existing Toowoomba range crossing and the new road present an opportunity to ensure that people are driving safely.
"Over many years the existing road has seen many accidents on it, and people do go down it fast. It is easy to be tempted, particularly since it was improved when we were in government.
"People do not necessarily follow the speed limits and they get around a corner and see the back of a big truck moving much slower than they were anticipating."
Point-to-point speed cameras record the time it takes motorists to get from one point to the next and then work out the average speed. A motorist is speeding if that average speed is above the speed limit.
The Chronicle understands the infrastructure has been installed to support point-to-point speed cameras on the Toowoomba Bypass, but it was up to the Queensland Police Service whether the actual cameras would be installed and turned on.
