From making-your-own stingrays and perusing electric vehicle displays to compost workshops with TV personality Costa Georgiadis and free plants to take home, there will be something for everyone at the 10th annual Cairns Ecofiesta at Munro Martin Parklands on June 22.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the event, which has previously hosted up to 10,000 people, was about celebrating sustainability and empowering the community.

“We know that the more people that come here and take away one or two little titbits … to change their behaviours and to change their way of thinking, will have a massive impact in our future going forward,” Ms Eden said.
“And of course we have a special visit from our special guest, the king of compost, the hairy host of Gardening Australia … Costa Georgiadis.”

Visitors will be able to peruse more than 100 volunteer-run stalls, enjoy live performances or take part in eco-friendly workshops or learn about electric vehicles.

Westco Motors Cairns sales manager Cameron Atkinson confirmed attendees could view a new range of ID Volkswagen vehicles at the EV Alley on Florence Street.

“We’re going to have our new ID range down here, that’s quite new for us … so what better way to (launch) it than with the 10 year anniversary of the Ecofiesta?” Mr Atkinson said.

Green Space Our Place team leader Melanie Constable said the event was a great way to connect with environmental programs around the community.

“There’s so many different programs that happen throughout Cairns that people don’t know about … that are contributing to the environment, lots of tree planting and revegetation and all that kind of thing,” Ms Constable said.

“It’s a chance to get to see what is really happening in the community.”

The Ecofiesta will open at 10am and is a free, non-ticketed event.
