A new mum has recounted the “scary” experience of learning her car was allegedly stolen from her home and used in a three-day crime rampage across Cairns and Townsville.

Danielle Monteith‘s Grand Jeep Cherokee is now sitting in a police yard after it was allegedly stolen by a 21-year-old man and 18-year-old man and driven up to Cairns.

“We have a one-year-old, so it was pretty scary knowing there was people inside our house and he was just down the hall,” Ms Monteith said.

She said the car, which was purchased in February, was meant to be the couple’s family car.

“That was my daily family car. It had my car seat, pram and all my baby stuff in it,” she said.

“We do have a backup car which I’m currently driving but it’s a four-wheel-drive that we bought cheap to fix before I was pregnant, and it needs a lot of work done on it to be safe to drive with a kid in it.”

While the Grand Jeep Cherokee remains impounded by Cairns police, Ms Monteith said one silver lining was the community support received from family, friends and total strangers.

“Even in Cairns, so many people have been so fantastic to help us, we’ve had people offering to collect our stuff and hold it until we can get to Cairns,” she said.

“The amount of havoc that they (allegedly) wreaked in 24 hours … I’m kind of glad knowing we did sleep through it.”
